Frequently Asked Questions
witty subtitle goes here, lol
Q. What is this "steampunk" I keep hearing about?
A. --
Q. Why isn't there a page for ranks/occupations?
A. Because you, my friend, have been given quite a bit of freedom! Your character can be (nearly) anything you want, and I don't expect you to have to scan a list of rank descriptions to find a niche for him or her. After browsing the content, you'll have a pretty good grasp of the setting and what kind of people are in it. Just use your imagination! Or if you don't want to do that, here's a giant wall of text full of fun occupation ideas I thought up just now:
Engineer, burlesque dancer, wizard, world leader, airship captain, priest, military officer, scientist, sky pirate, holy knight, scholar, musician, mercenary, farmer, government official, demon-slayer, author, prostitute, mechanic, doctor, jumi knight, tailor, bounty hunter, student, aristocrat, police officer, sailor, air courier, shopkeeper, hobo, church leader, factory worker, fisherman, actor
If you're feeling particularly daring, you could even combine two or more into one character! I'm all for the wizard-prostitute-farmer combo. It's one of my faves, next to Dr. Hobo.
Q. How does time pass IC on SITENAME?
A. One IC year is equal to one OOC year, and the twelve months pass in accordance with real life. Beyond that, you’re free to set dates as you please.
Q. Can my character be in more than one thread at a time?
A. Feel free to fling your character into as many threads as you like! Just make sure you keep some kind of chronological order in mind so he or she isn't literally in two places at once. An easy way to do this is by using the roleplay log on your profile.
Also, don't feel obligated to keep your character grounded in one nation for his or her entire existence in the RP. Even the biggest homebodies can travel from time to time, and in doing so they might meet characters that they would have never run into otherwise. Have your character take a carriage ride to a neighboring town. Have him ride horseback into the countryside. As for long-distance travel, that's definitely not out of the question either. Airships and steam-engine trains are the main forms of mass transportation, and tickets aren't terribly expensive.
Q. Are members welcome to suggest additions to the bestiary?
A. Suggestions are very welcome. I think it'll be neat to have member contributions to our compendium of creatures. If you have an idea, just send me a message and tell me about it. If the animal seems interesting and plausible, we'll add it to the bestiary. That being said, there will be some criteria for entries. The main thing to remember is that SITENAME is fantasy, but it's not high fantasy. There will be no unicorns, dryads, elves, centaurs, trolls, orcs, et cetera. The dragons and fairies are about as high fantasy as it gets here, and we want to keep it that way. ;3
Q. I have an idea for a fun plot! Can I bring it up in the OOC?
A. Sure! Any plot ideas you have can be posted on the Bulletins board. Just avoid over-planning when you discuss plots. Sometimes it's good to have a direction mapped out when you start to RP, but it's no fun if everyone on the site knows exactly what's going to happen! If you want, you can do your plot-making over private messaging -- or even take it off-site.
Q. Can I set up relationships between characters OOC?
A. Yes, but we want to keep it to a minimum. Your character doesn't need to know every other character on the site. Feel free to post on the Bulletins board if you want to find a few friends, family, or other connections, but don't go all-out with the fancy stuff. To put it simply, we just don't want mile-long history threads with lists of different levels of relationships, song lyrics, and a metric ton of images and icons. Keep it simple~ The Bulletins board is for setting things up for RP; it's not meant to be the go-to spot to see who knows who.
